Austria vignette fines: what happens without one?
Without a valid vignette on toll A/S roads you risk a substitute toll or fine. Enforcement is digital via your plate — “I didn’t see a checkpoint” is not a defence.

Cameras and database checks verify whether your plate has an active vignette. No windscreen sticker is required. Even transit without stopping at the border can be captured.
Why people get fined
Wrong or late start dates, plate typos, wrong registration country, confusing section-toll tickets with the vignette, or driving before registration completes. Expired 10-day products “for one more night” are classics.
How to stay safe
Order before departure, check the confirmation (plate, country, period), allow registration buffer time, and handle section tolls separately. When unsure, pick the longer duration instead of a tight 10-day window.
