Austria vignette
ASFINAG digital vignette — what to know before you drive, which duration fits, and how to order via Vignette Go.
Do I need a vignette for Austria?
You need a digital vignette if you drive a car or motorcycle (up to 3.5 t) on Austria’s toll motorways or expressways — for example the A1, A2 or A10. Purely local trips on non-toll roads often do not. Motorhomes and trailers: verify weight and class. Transit drivers from Germany, Italy or Slovenia need the vignette from the first toll kilometre, not only when a border checkpoint is visible.
- Typically covers: The digital vignette covers toll motorways and expressways in the ASFINAG network (A- and S-roads). Not every road in Austria requires a vignette: many federal and regional roads and town centres are free. Section tolls such as Brenner, Tauern, Karawanken or Arlberg need separate tickets — the vignette does not replace them.
- Vehicle class: Cars and motorcycles up to 3.5 t maximum authorised mass (passenger class). Heavier vehicles and some trailer combinations use other toll systems — check category and weight before you buy.
- Validity: The vignette is valid only after it is registered to your plate in the ASFINAG system and the chosen start date begins. Clicking “order” at a reseller is not enough. Allow buffer time: manual registration usually happens during daytime hours, not instantly at midnight.
Available durations
Pick the duration that matches your trip.
- 10 days€12.80Best for short trips and weekends. Set the start date so arrival and departure calendar days are covered (calendar days, not a rolling 24 hours from entry). For borderline longer stays, compare with 2 months.
- 2 months€32.00Useful for multi-week holidays, project commuting, or several entries within two months. Often cheaper than buying two separate 10-day vignettes — do a quick cost check.
- 1 year€106.80For frequent drivers, second homes, or regular Austria trips. Validity follows ASFINAG annual rules from registration/chosen start — not automatically a Jan–Dec calendar year unless booked that way.

Key facts
- Digital vignette is bound to plate + country of registration — no windscreen sticker.
- Visitors usually pick 10 days or 2 months; the annual product pays off with several trips per year.
- Official source and tariff base: shop.asfinag.at — resellers add a service fee for convenience.
- Common mistake: Most issues come from the wrong start date (forgetting arrival day), a mistyped plate (country/format), or confusing section tolls with the vignette. Trailer and vehicle-category mistakes also lead to fines even when drivers feel they “bought something”.
